Background

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Welcome to this website about Palliative and End-of-Life Education for health professionals, students and educators. Our goal in creating this website is to share information about caring for patients and families who receive palliative care, including end-of-life care.

The definition of palliative care that we are using is that put forth by Dr. Ann Berger, Chief of the Pain and Palliative Care Service at the Warren Grant Magnuson Clinical Center, National Institutes of Health.

"Palliative care is the combination of active and compassionate therapies primarily focused on alleviating the physical, psychological, social and spiritual suffering of the patient, family and caregiver."

(Kirsch, B. October, 2002. Salve for the Body and Mind. Scientific American, 287, 4 (44-45) as quoting Dr. Ann Berger)

We are proud to present to you for your consideration these educational video productions about advanced illness, palliative and end-of-life care. We look forward to sharing our work and the work of others as we collectively provide care to patients and families who are experiencing a chronic, life-threatening or life-limiting illness or condition.

Sincerely,

Linda K. Strodtman PhD, RN and Maureen G. Giacomazza MA, RN
