Our
Patient and Families
This 32-bed
unit provides 24-hour nursing care to adult patients. It is
the home floor for Pulmonary and Internal Medicine. A team
approach utilizing ICU Techs is nursing care delivery system
on 6C. Within this system, RNs assume the role of Patient
Care Coordinator responsible for planning patient care from
admission to discharge.
Types
of patients treated within 6C include pulmonary patients present
with compromise of the cardiopulmonary system. Many of the
patient population on 6C are transferred to this unit from
the adjacent Critical Medicine Unit. These patients can often
be a challenge to your nursing skills in the areas of assessment
and clinical intervention. Pulmonary Medicine patients are
typically admitted with problems such as asthma, Wegner's
granuloma, COPD, pleural effusion, pulmonary embolus, pneumothorax,
pneumonia, sarcidosis, and cystic fibrosis. Internal Medicine
patients are admitted with a variety of diseases, and our
patient ages range from adults to the elderly. Typical patients
present with diabetes, renal failure, liver disease, HTN,
and CHF.
Philosophy
of Care
The nurses of 6C believe that the
patient who is an active participant in his/her own health
care is one who is educated about their illness, its implications,
and the means by which one can make a positive adaptation
in order to live and achieve within the existing state of
wellness.
Caregivers
within 6C subscribe to a holistic approach which places equal
emphasis upon the physical, psychological, emotional and cultural
needs of the patient and significant others as we strive to
assist them in the attainment of self sufficiency and a return
to the environment that best meets their needs.
