Our Patient and Families
The 5 East staff welcomes any and all age groups that make up a patient population -- the majority of our patient's range in age from birth to young adult. Patients with a cardiac or congenital heart defect diagnoses are the primary focus of the unit, but patients with any diagnosis can be found on 5E. A six bed Moderate Care Area is a part of the unit and provides step down care for our ICU or closer observation for the general floor. There are 15 beds available on the general care floor. Some facilities and services available for families to use while here are the Play Park area, Children's Activity Center, Laundry room, Breast Pump room for breastfeeding mothers, Unit Host assistance and computer access for families. If your child is an inpatient, guided tours can be given upon request.

Philosophy of Care
This is a unit whose nursing mission is to provide world-class care in a family centered environment. 5 East partners with the Pediatric Cardiology Clinic and the Pediatric Cardio/Thoracic ICU to make up the University of Michigan Congenital Heart Center. This allows the unit to be an essential part of the seamless delivery of patient care by a multidisciplinary health care team using a collaborative approach, of which nursing is an integral part. 5E Nursing provides compassionate care and health education to patients and families using the latest in research and evidence based practice.
