Rib Fractures



GENERAL INFORMATION:

If you have one or more broken ribs, please be aware of the following:
  • You will continue to have pain over the injured ribs for 3 to 8 weeks, which will improve over time.
  • You should continue to use the incentive spirometer at least 3 to 4 times each day.
  • Coughing will be painful but is necessary to prevent lung infections. Use a pillow to support the area while coughing.
  • Avoid strenuous activities but do exercise as tolerated.
  • Only take prescribed medicines or Tylenol for pain.
Please contact your physician or nurse if you experience the following:
  • Have a fever over 101.5F
  • Develop a cough that you cannot control
  • Begin to vomit or have abdominal pain
  • Have trouble breathing
  • Have worsening pain
  • Begin coughing up thick or colored material
Ask your doctor or nurse if you do not understand these instructions or if you need more information.
