POST-CESSATION WEIGHT GAIN

NRL Research on Post-cessation Weight Gain

Women smokers and postcessation weight gain and/or weight concerns in women has been a major area of research in our Laboratory, resulting from two large projects (one funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), the other-entitled "Fear of Weight Gain As A Barrier for Smoking Cessation In Women," funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation), as well as several smaller projects. Our work encompasses disordered eating, body image disturbances, and "nonpathological" weight concerns that nonetheless can serve as a barrier to quitting smoking.

In addition, Dr. Cynthia S. Pomerleau is currently working on a book and website for weight-concerned women smokers, entitled Life After Cigarettes: An Intelligent Woman’s Guide to Managing Weight and Looking Great During and After Quitting. Information upon how to obtain this book will be posted on this website as soon as it is available. To receive an e-mail notification, send a request to niclab@med.umich.edu.
