Our traditional focus on cerebrovascular diseases in the Crosby Neurosurgical Laboratories continues to expand.
Our faculty include director Richard Keep, Anuska Andejelkovic-Zochowska, Steven Ennis, Ya Hua, Guohua Xi, Chia-Ying Lin, Timothy Schallert and Gerald Schielke.
Our National Institutes of Health-funded projects focus on brain edema and long-term neurodegeneration following intracerebral hemorrhage. There is very promising data on the potential use of iron chelators in this devastating form of stroke.
Other NIH-funded projects focus on preconditioning stimuli that protect against stroke. These stimuli elicit a variety of protective changes in the brain, changes that may one day be harnessed to reduce brain injury.
Dr. Oren Sagher continues his pioneering work on the effects of spinal cord stimulation on brain injury after stroke.
The Crosby Laboratories also have expanded into new fields. In particular, studies are ongoing on the role of thrombin in Parkinson's disease and brain tumors. This expands upon the expertise of the labs on thrombin, a long-term focus of interest in stroke.
