Marina Mata, M.D.

Marina Mata, M.D. was born in Barcelona, Spain, attended the Insitut Maragall, the University of Barcelona, and the Medical School of the University of Barcelona from which she received her MD. After serving as an intern and resident in medicine at the Ciudad Sanitaria Francisco Franco in Barcelona, Dr. Mata came to the NIH as a Fogarty International Fellow, working under Tom Chase, Phil Nelson, and Hal Gainer. She completed a residency in neurology at the University of Michigan, and after a second postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Richard Baringer at UCSF returned to Michigan to join the faculty in the Department of Neurology. She moved to the University of Pittsburgh in 1995, and returned to Michigan in 2004.

Dr. Mata is Professor of Neurology in the University of Michigan School of Medicine, and also appointed as a staff physician at the affiliated VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System. She is Board Certified in Neurology, and has an active clinical practice in general neurology. Dr. Mata has collaborated closely with Dr. David Fink for over 25 years in studies of neuronal cell biology and the development of HSV-mediated gene transfer for the treatment of diseases of the nervous system.
