I toyed with various ideas about what I wanted to be when I grew up: theatrical lighting designer, professor of Latin and Greek, physician. I ultimately decided that medicine was the path for me, particularly neurology. My wife, a pediatrics resident at Michigan, and I were looking for a place that has a strong academic tradition but is also a friendly environment with great people. We were even more selective since we were looking for two departments with these qualities, which we found in both of our departments as well as in the U of M Internal Medicine Department where I did my intern year. Every subspecialty of neurology at Michigan is strongly represented with faculty who are at the top of their fields and love to teach, and I have found a solid education in all of neurology here. Also, the residents here are the best group of residents I could ever hope to work with, plus there are weekly ultimate Frisbee games.

As for Ann Arbor, I love it; it has everything I need. Being a bit of a gourmet, there are numerous delicious places I have found at which to eat, though barbeque and Mexican are a bit lacking. My theater habit it supported by great theater from university productions to the Purple Rose Theater in nearby Chelsea. There are parks and trails all around town to explore, and the proximity to Mackinac Island, Chicago, and other destinations (not to mention the airport), makes Ann Arbor a great place for those who, like me, love to travel.
