Multiple Sclerosis / Neuroimmunology

Physicians and scientists at the University of Michigan Multiple Sclerosis Center and the Holtom-Garrett Neuroimmunology Laboratory are actively engaged in research to increase our understanding of the pathogenesis of MS and its genetic and environmental influences. Our ultimate goal is to gain insight into novel therapeutic strategies that halt progression and limit tissue damage.

One arm of the research effort involves the use of animal models and in vitro systems to unravel disease mechanisms. Another avenue of investigation seeks to draw correlations between the expression of inflammatory mediators in the blood or spinal fluid of patients with MS and inflammatory events in the CNS documented by advanced imaging techniques.

Finally, we conduct clinical trials to assess novel immunomodulatory and symptomatic treatments in both relapsing-remitting and progressive MS.

In addition to deepening our knowledge base, we are devoted to training future generations of scientists and physicians.

Current research projects by our investigators are sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and the Dana Foundation.
