Dr. Mata's research program is directed at understanding the pathogenesis of injury and degeneration in the nervous system, and developing novel therapeutic approaches using viral vector-mediated gene transfer. The conditions under investigation include Parkinson's disease, spinal cord injury, and nerve root injury and regeneration.
