Faculty Research
Douglas Gelb, MD, PhD. ( dgelb@umich.edu )
Clinical Professor
Dr. Gelb has two basic areas of research interest. The first is general clinical neurology, especially with respect to the characterization of degenerative neurologic diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. The second is neurologic education. He is interested in rigorously evaluating teaching methodologies. For example, he developed a computer tutorial on the principles of neuroanatomical localization, and then performed a randomized, controlled trial to see whether it was more effective than traditional written materials (it wasn't). He is also interested in outcome measures in education. For example, he has investigated whether junior residents, senior residents, and faculty differ in a systematic way in their clinical evaluations of students (they don't), and whether student evaluations differ in a systematic way depending on how far along the students are in their clinical training (they don't).
