Dr. Consens's clinical research interests include sleep disorders in the critically ill; the overlap of sleep disorders with other medical disorders; neurological basis of sleep disorders such as narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome and REM behavior disorder; disorders of sleepiness and sleep in women. Ongoing research projects include the contribution of sleep disruption and sleep disorders on clinical outcomes in the critically ill, the contribution of sleep apnea on impaired glucose regulation and on the treatment of persistent asthma, and an epidemiological study of sleep characteristics of perimenopausal women.
Additional interests include the neurochemistry of REM sleep behavior disorder in patients with neurodegenerative disorders; the clinical significance of periodic leg movements during sleep; sleep medicine education and the cost-effectiveness of continuous positive airway pressure and alternative treatments for obstructive sleep apnea. |
