Residency Training Program
Educational Philosophy The Department of Neurology at the University of Michigan offers professional training in neurology with a carefully developed residency program. Training in clinical neurology is based at the University of Michigan Hospitals and the Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Ann Arbor . Each resident's clinical experience is supplemented with formal instruction in clinical neurology, psychiatry, genetics, and several areas of neuroscience, including neuroanatomy, neurochemistry, neurophysiology, neuropathology, and neuropharmacology. Neurology residents at the University of Michigan find that their experience in this program fosters intellectual curiosity that leads to continuing self-education for the remainder of their professional careers.
The following are among the important tenets of our educational philosophy:
- Clinical neurology is best learned when framed in a scientific perspective.
- Residents learn best when their experience at the bedside and in the clinic is supplemented with active teaching by experienced faculty.
- Residents should gradually progress in responsibility from the first year to the third year as they gain knowledge, ability, experience, and confidence.
- Instruction in both the outpatient and inpatient settings is essential for the training of neurologists.
- Elective time is important to allow residents to explore their interests and to prepare for the next stage of their careers.
- The design of the educational program benefits from the input of residents as well as faculty.
- Residents are professional colleagues who deserve the same respect afforded to other professional colleagues.
