The Neurology Service at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System provides neurologic services including EEG, EMG, and evoked potentials to veterans throughout Michigan and parts of Ohio and Indiana (VISN 11). Neurology Clinics are held four days/week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday). The number of patients evaluated annually in clinic exceeds 2,500. Common diagnostic problems include:
- Headache and other pain syndromes
- Parkinson's disease, tremor, and other movement disorders
- Stroke and transient ischemic attack
- Epilepsy and seizure disorders
- Neuropathy and other neuromuscular diseases
- Alzheimer's disease and other dementias
- Multiple sclerosis
- Traumatic brain injury
- Spinal cord injury
- Brain tumors
- Sleep disorders
On average, the number of EEGs obtained annually exceeds 200 and the number of EMGs exceeds 100. Other available services coordinated or arranged by Neurology include acute stroke care, sleep studies, diagnostic monitoring of epilepsy, chemotherapy for multiple sclerosis, and electrode stimulator implantation and management for medically-refractory Parkinson's disease and essential tremor.
The Neurology Service provides around-the-clock consultative services to patients in the Emergency Room and Urgent Care as well as Extended Care, Psychiatry, and other inpatient services. On average the number of annual consults exceeds 400. In addition, the Neurology Service maintains a small inpatient service. All VA neurology staff are Board-Certified and also on staff at the University of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor . The VA Medical Center is located less than one-half mile from the University of Michigan Medical Center.
Basic and clinical research in neurology is an integral component of the VA Neurology Service. Areas of research focus by the VA neurology faculty include Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease and other neurogenetic diseases, neuropathy, pain syndromes, and gene therapy of neurologic diseases. Resident and medical student education is strongly supported, and University of Michigan residents and medical students welcome the opportunity to contribute to the clinical care of veterans at the Ann Arbor VA.
