Neuromuscular Program

The Neuromuscular Program provides special expertise in evaluation and treatment of disorders of the peripheral nervous system, neuromuscular junction and muscle . Neuromuscular Program members, who perform approximately 800 new patient consultations and 1500 electrodiagnsotic studies each year, include:

James W. Teener, M.D., Director Neuromuscular Program

  • James W. Albers, M.D., Ph.D
  • Eva L. Feldman, M.D., Ph.D
  • Kirsten L. Gruis, M.D.
  • Ann A. Little, M.D.
  • Zachary N. London, M.D.
  • Annemarie Schoennemann, RN, CRNP
  • Timothy Funckes, R.N.

Disorders for which specific diagnostic or treatment protocols are available include:

  • inflammatory neuropathies
  • amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other motor neuron disease
  • diabetic polyneuropathy
  • hereditary neuropathy
  • toxic neuropathy
  • myasthenia gravis (MG) and other disorders of the neuromuscular junction
  • inflammatory and degenerative myopathies
  • muscular dystrophy
  • metabolic myopathy including mitochordrial disorders

The initial neuromuscular appointment frequently combines the electrodiagnostic and clinical appointments, for patient convenience and to avoid duplication of effort. The EMG laboratory at the University of Michigan Medical Center is a leader in education and service, providing a variety of services including single fiber EMG and autonomic testing. Additional services associated with the neuromuscular clinic include nerve and muscle biopsy, ischemic muscle testing, therapeutic plasma exchange, intravenous immunoglobulin therapy and other immunosuppressant protocols.

The ALS Association certified Motor Neuron Disease Clinic provides expert diagnostic services and compassionate supportive and terminal care throughout the course of the disease. A multidisciplinary care system within the University structure and the community share the goal of keeping this terminally ill population at home and free of complications that result in hospitalization or other costly medical interventions. Full psychosocial and family support services are also provided.

Please contact the Neuromuscular Program with referral information or if you have further questions.
