Epilepsy Clinic

The Epilepsy Clinic at the University of Michigan cares for a wide variety of adults with seizures, ranging from patients presenting with a first seizure to epilepsy patients considering surgical resection or placement of a vagus nerve stimulation device. Approximately 3000 patients are seen each year by six nationally recognized epileptologists, a clinical nurse specialist and several epilepsy fellows. A multidisciplinary team, consisting of the epilepsy practitioners, a neurosurgeon, a neuropsychologist, a neuroradiologist, a social worker and a speech pathologist, meet weekly to discuss the management of the most complicated cases. We monitor and adjust medications in monotherapy or polytherapy while carefully minimizing side effects. Clinical trials of new medications are offered to patients who are not controlled with approved medications. Patients receive extensive education about safety measures, driving and work restrictions, medication options and surgical treatments. They are counseled about pregnancy, lifestyle and social issues. Issues of depression and anxiety, which are common in this population, are carefully evaluated and treated.

In difficult cases, we refer patients from clinic for inpatient video-EEG monitoring to determine the nature of the spells and localize ictal onset zones for possible surgical resection. Our center offers complete surgical evaluation and treatment, using ictal SPECT scans, positron emission tomography ( PET), depth electrodes, subdural grid recordings and electrocorticography as appropriate for each individual to precisely locate the abnormal area and maximize the success of each outcome.
