Cognitive Disorders

The Cognitive Disorders Clinic evaluates problems of memory and thinking ability that can occur with aging. It provides definitive diagnosis and comprehensive management of patients with memory loss, disorders of higher cognitive function and dementia. Disorders of particular interest include Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer mimics, such as frontal dementia, Parkinson's disease with dementia, progressive supranuclear palsy, dementia with Lewy bodies and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Early-onset, rapidly progressive, and familial dementias are particularly appropriate for this clinic. The Cognitive Disorders Clinic integrates clinical care, research and the training of health professionals to provide patients and families with the latest advances in dementia care.

Featured programs include:

* Neuropsychological assessment

* Brain imaging, including positron emission tomography (PET)

* Referrals to community services, driving evaluation, and social work consultation

* Referrals to research programs including the Michigan Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, the Alzheimer's Disease Cooperative Study, and pharmaceutical industry sponsored clinical drug trials

Patients most appropriate for referral have:

a. Rapidly progressive dementia

b. Familial dementia

c. Mild Alzheimer's disease and are interested in research participation

d. Suspected frontotemporal dementia, Lewy Body Dementia or dementia other than Alzheimer's disease.

e. Mild cognitive impairment or isolated memory impairment, i.e. significant memory loss but no functional impairment or obvious explanation such as head injury, stroke, psychiatric illness, or serious medical illness

Patients less than 50 years old with cognitive complaints are usually most appropriate for referral to general neurology clinic
