    MHG    (Multicultural Health Generalization)

Although the following information may apply to some individuals, this is not to infer these are beliefs and/or practices of the majority of this population.

When using this information/tool, please keep in mind the following definitions:
Stereotype - ending point.  When stereotyping, one makes an assumption about a person based on group membership without learning whether or not that individual fits the assumption.
Generalization - starting point.  When generalizing, one begins with an assumption about a group but then seeks further information about whether the assumption fits that individual.

This month's MHG recognizes October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

Promoting and improving the delivery of culturally competent care is a main focus of the University of Michigan Ypsilanti Health Center (YHC).  Some patients and families intentionally seek care at YHC because they know they will be treated with respect while receiving the culturally competent care they deserve.

The Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) committee at the YHC works to ensure that the health center has proper signage, has translated core documentation, and utilizes trained medical interpreters (in person or via phone) when needed for patient visits.  These efforts have helped emphasize the importance of meeting cultural needs, and increased staff appreciation for cultural differences among patients and families.

The overall diversity of staff at YHC has also been instrumental in meeting patient needs and improving patient satisfaction.  The various staff members that are bicultural and/or bilingual are in a position to provide unique assistance to diverse patients.

Cultural competency is a journey, not a destination. Through learning opportunities sought and knowledge gained during cross-cultural encounters between staff and their patients and families, YHC continues to improve the delivery of culturally competent care.
