    MHG    (Multicultural Health Generalization)

Although the following information may apply to some individuals, this is not to infer these are beliefs and/or practices of the majority of this population.

When using this information/tool, please keep in mind the following definitions:
Stereotype - ending point.  When stereotyping, one makes an assumption about a person based on group membership without learning whether or not that individual fits the assumption.
Generalization - starting point.  When generalizing, one begins with an assumption about a group but then seeks further information about whether the assumption fits that individual.

This month's MHG recognizes July 29th as "Dharma Day" of the Buddhist faith.

Carolyn White , Turner Asian Outreach Program

Over the past five years, the Turner Senior Resource Center (TSRC) has pioneered community outreach to the senior Asian population in Ann Arbor in collaboration with existing Chinese and Korean community groups. In addition, the Asian Americans Outreach Program (AAOP) has helped Korean and Chinese seniors obtain and sustain an improved quality of life through a variety of educational and recreational activities. AAOP participants regularly have the opportunity to engage in programs such as health lectures, book clubs, calligraphy and watercolor classes, computer classes, informational workshops, individual medicare counseling, and Chinese and Korean holiday celebrations in their native language. These programs and activities are created in a culturally competent manner, with the sensitivity and understanding of the population's diverse needs and abilities.

Cultural competency efforts of TSRC have had a large impact on the Asian immigrant seniors involved with AAOP. Culturally-tailored programming for this population has not only promoted physical and mental well-being, but has also greatly enhanced the social well-being of Asian seniors in the community. Chinese and Korean seniors frequently have positive interactions with American seniors, which helps boost their impressions of the United States and their confidence in multilingual interactions as well as involvement in other programs of TSRC. Additionally, it has increased and enhanced multicultural socialization amongst the TSRC staff.

Volunteers play an important role in sustaining the AAOP by greeting visitors, serving on committees, assisting with the resource library, leading "Learning in Retirement" study groups, setting up meetings, and more. Many of the Korean and Chinese volunteers are diverse in age and live in the Ann Arbor community, which helps enhance intergenerational cultural competency needs as well.

Overall, TSRC efforts have helped enhance multicultural and intergenerational interaction amongst seniors, staff, and volunteers. The opportunities for collaboration and socialization have allowed all persons to gain a deeper understanding of each other's diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds, which in turn has helped to create a culturally competent workforce. The activities within TSRC and AAOP have been culturally beneficial for all persons involved and has added to the richness of their experiences at TSRC.
