Q:  Who is quoted with saying "The delivery of culturally competent services is more than simply a patient’s right, but in fact a key factor in the safety and quality of patient care."

    MHG    (Multicultural Health Generalization)

Although the following information may apply to some individuals, this is not to infer these are beliefs and/or practices of the majority of this population.

When using this information/tool, please keep in mind the following definitions:
Stereotype - ending point.  When stereotyping, one makes an assumption about a person based on group membership without learning whether or not that individual fits the assumption.
Generalization - starting point.  When generalizing, one begins with an assumption about a group but then seeks further information about whether the assumption fits that individual.

This month's MHG recognizes:

  Geriatric Chinese Patients

Deborah J. Anderson, PFANS

Meal selection remains one of the few facets of control a person can maintain while undergoing medical treatment.  Recognizing that communicating menu items with limited English proficiency (LEP) patients and those with hearing or speech loss was a challenge, Deborah J. Anderson, a Patient Food and Nutrition Services (PFANS) Dietetic Technician, partnered with UMHS Interpreter Services to brainstorm solutions. The result was a pictorial menu implemented in May 2006.

This new menu features pictures of food typically desired by our UMHS patient population, including religious and cultural preferences.  Dietetic Technicians and others can use this pictorial tool to effectively communicate the meal selection process with patients.

Patients simply point on the menu to their desired food selections for meals and snacks.  A clock with designated times printed on the menu indicates which meal they are selecting (breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snacks).  Instructions and a brief introduction are included on the menu in the five languages most requested through Interpreter Services: Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Russian, and Japanese.

"The most rewarding experience was using the menu I developed with the patient who inspired the idea in the first place. I'm sure she had no idea why I wiped away a tear or two but it was a very rewarding experience to know how worthwhile the effort was.  ‘Patients and families first’ is what it is all about."
