    MHG    (Multicultural Health Generalization)

Although the following information may apply to some individuals, this is not to infer these are beliefs and/or practices of the majority of this population.

When using this information/tool, please keep in mind the following definitions:
Stereotype - ending point.  When stereotyping, one makes an assumption about a person based on group membership without learning whether or not that individual fits the assumption.
Generalization - starting point.  When generalizing, one begins with an assumption about a group but then seeks further information about whether the assumption fits that individual.

This month's MHG recognizes the Cambodian (Khmer) New Year from April 13-15.

  Susan Gibney, Holden ICU Nursery

The Neonatal ICU recognizes the special needs of critically ill newborns and their families by providing individualized care with sensitivity to special cultural, religious, and language needs.  End-of-life and palliative care situations are particularly sensitive.  Some young families in crisis lack the guidance of their extended families.  In the past year, Holden has expanded the role of the Bereavement Support Coordinator to encompass a team of over a dozen nurses and social workers.  Members of this team have acquired specialized training to facilitate palliative care, end-of-life care, and bereavement support for families experiencing a death.  The “Pathways” team currently serves various roles, including 1) acts as a resource to bedside caretakers, 2) makes follow-up contacts to assess family needs for referrals and counseling, and 3) answers clinical questions to facilitate the grieving process.  The nurses at bedside are then empowered to ask the family if there is anything more they can do for them and to offer:

  • Interpreter services
  • Explanatory and supportive literature in their language
  • Special clothing/wrappings
  • Special procedures, as in “facing Mecca”
  • Private environment for support withdrawal, and “saying goodbye,” ritual washings/wrapping
  • Information about the grieving process in their language
  • Invitation to the annual “Walk to Remember and Tree Planting Memorial” for “Pregnancy and Newborn Loss,” in their own language
  • Condolence cards and sibling literature in their language
  • Follow-up phone call with interpreter assistance, as they require
  • Inclusion of spiritual advisors
