UMHS Cultural Compentency Survey

The purpose of this survey was to take care of our own by giving all UMHS employees a platform to express their needs which can then be tied to action plans.

The goal of this survey was to address what employees have learned, would like to learn, and are concerned about when providing culturally competent health care. Preferred educational methods were also assessed.

The survey results are helping to guide UMHS's cultural competency efforts and to document and increase compliance with Joint Commission's cultural standards.

Survey findings are also helping to determine UMHS's direction to better serve its patients and employees' needs.

  Survey Results Summary:

  • 1,016 respondents
  • Accessed January 22 - February 2, 2007
  • 22 questions

Questions 1-13 pertain to awareness, education, and knowledge of cultural competency at UMHS
Questions 14-18 show participant demographics
Questions 19-22 address comments, concerns, and ideas for improvement

    Question 1:
Cultural Competency is defined as the acceptance and respect for difference, a continuous self-assessment regarding culture, an attention to the dynamics of difference, the ongoing development of cultural knowledge, and the resources and flexibility within service models to meet the needs of minority populations (Cross et al., 1989).

Cultural competency is relevant to my job.
