Sandra L. Wong, MD, MS
Assistant Professor, Surgical Oncology
 

Dr. Wong is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Surgical Oncology. Dr. Wong graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with an undergraduate degree in Molecular and Cell Biology and minor in Business Administration in 1992. She received her medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Wong went on to complete her General Surgery residency and surgical research fellowship at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in Louisville, Kentucky. In June 2005, she completed a clinical fellowship in Surgical Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, where she served as the Chief Administrative Fellow. Dr. Wong then sought advanced training in clinical research design and statistical analysis and obtained a Masters of Science from the University of Michigan's School of Public Health.

Dr. Wong's clinical interests are in surgical oncology, with a focus on upper gastrointestinal tract cancers, melanoma, and sarcoma. She is active in many professional societies and currently is a member of the Outcomes Task Force of the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO) and is the Chair-elect of the Health Services Committee of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). Her research focuses on improving the quality of cancer care by examining hospital characteristics. Her work with John Birkmeyer, with funding from the National Cancer Institute and in cooperation with the American College of Surgeons, is exploring why some hospitals and surgeons have better outcomes than others, with ultimate goal of improving care in all settings.
