C.S. Mott Children's Hospital
Associate Director Clinical Affairs
Associate Chief of Staff, Office of Clinical Affairs and Associate Chair, Department of Pediatrics serves three major functions.
First is a focus on patient safety. Ongoing efforts in these areas include the Pediatric Medication Safety Committee that has made significant changes in pediatric medication and administration. For example, we have standardized continuous infusions which have decreased the number of adverse events. We are also responsible for instituting the JCAHO’s national patient safety goals in Mott Hospital. Lastly, we conduct patient safety rounds on all the inpatient units in Mott Hospital to see direct feedback from frontline personnel as to their specific patient safety concerns.
The second area is the quality of care. This includes continuing support for databases to accurately measure our quality of care. Examples would include our Vermont-Oxford database in the neonatal intensive care unit and the virtual PICU database. We also chair the serious adverse events that occur in Mott to determine a root cause of these events so that they can be prevented in the future. Lastly our office assists the Associate Chair for Clinical Affairs in developing a meaningful peer review system for the department.
Third, our office assists with important safety and quality initiatives associated with hospital administration. Examples, of this include sedation privileges and safe sedation practices for our patients throughout Mott hospital. We also are extensively involved in new hospital planning, upgrading pieces of equipment such as monitors, and finally actively participate in bed utilization during times of high census. The Pediatric Associate Director of Clinical Affairs, Chris Dickinson, M.D., is a Professor of Pediatrics and Director in the Division of Gastroenterology.
