The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital has a longstanding tradition of excellence in patient care, research, resident and fellow education, and clinical research training.

Through early detection, prevention, and treatment of endocrine and metabolic disorders affecting infants, children, and teens, our multidisciplinary team offers the most advanced comprehensive care available. This experienced team includes pediatric endocrinologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, certified diabetes educators, dieticians, psychologists, social workers, and researchers.

The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology has an active fellowship training program that is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The strong research endeavor is recognized by continued support from the National Institutes of Health and the State of Michigan. This Division has been chosen to be the exclusive provider of newborn endocrinology services for the Neonatal Screening Program of the State of Michigan.

This Division provides care for children with diseases and disorders of the hormones derived from endocrine glands. They treat children with various conditions including adrenal and thyroid abnormalities and disorders relating to metabolism, growth, puberty, and sex differentiation. Specialized clinics include the Weight Assessment Clinic and the Diabetes Clinic, with an emphasis on education and psychological support for families and prevention of complications. The Diabetes Self-Management Education Program for patients and their families is recognized for its excellence via certification by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the State of Michigan. The Diabetes Program is also unique in that it is staffed by the only ADA/NCQA physician care-provider for childhood diabetes in the State of Michigan.

This issue of Michigan Cares highlights specialty clinics and conditions in pediatric endocrinology. The clinics include the Weight Assessment Clinic, the Intersex Gender Clinic, and the Pediatric Diabetes Program, and the conditions highlighted include children with diagnoses such as Prader-Willi syndrome, Turner’s syndrome, and growth hormone deficiency. It also features information about the newborn screening program and the special support program for children with diabetes.
