Mott's the Tops

Mott ranked top children’s hospital in state by Child magazine

The University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital is ranked as the top children’s hospital in the state, and among the best in the nation, according to a highly competitive national survey released in January by Child magazine. The results of the comprehensive nine-month survey also place pediatric cardiac care at Mott among the 10 best in the country, with the specialty ranking seventh. Mott Hospital ranked No. 13 overall, up one spot from Child magazine’s 2005 national survey.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have Mott recognized among some of the best hospitals in the country,” says Patricia A. Warner, chief administrative officer for Children’s and Women’s Services. “This ranking belongs to the faculty, staff and volunteers whose work has made Mott a top-notch hospital for children from Michigan and around the country.”

The 247-question survey—completed by 76 hospitals across the country—examines vital medical information, including survival rates, the number of complex procedures and intricate surgeries conducted, volume of research studies, efforts to reduce medical errors, and the quality and training of doctors and nurses—as well as child-friendliness, support for families and community involvement. The responses were graded to determine the best hospitals overall and the leaders in six pediatric subspecialty areas.

Child magazine’s “Best Hospitals” rankings for 2007 appeared in the February 2007 issue of the magazine. Read the rankings online at www.child.com.

Brighter Teeth, Brighter Future

For the third year in a row, for a four-month period (March 1 to June 30, 2007) Ypsilanti dentist Gary Sasaki is helping his dental patients AND the patients at the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital at the same time.

Sasaki is a member of the Crown Council, an alliance of leading dental teams throughout the United States and Canada that are strongly committed to promoting oral health, fighting oral cancer and serving their communities through charitable work. Sasaki and other members of the Crown Council participate in the Smiles for Life program. He donates his time and services, and Discus Dental donates the whitening materials, so that all of the patients who get their teeth whitened during that four-month period write checks to Mott Hospital (or Garth Brooks’ Teammates for Kids Foundation) instead of paying Sasaki.

Sasaki’s program has already raised $20,000 for Mott Hospital in just two years. Mott’s Child and Family Life department will benefit from the 2007 Smiles for Life.
