In August, the assembly of the tallest free−standing crane in North America announced a milestone in the progress of the new children’s hospital and women’s hospital replacement project. Flying from the top of the crane is a sign proclaiming "C.S. Mott: Full of Helping Hands." The art was designed by 2−year−old patient Paige Doutre, along with her parents Teara and George.

A theme about Helping Hands is very appropriate for this issue that features people who are committed to patient care in numerous ways. On page 4 we honor Robert Hensinger, M.D., who was the University of Michigan’s first pediatric orthopaedic surgeon and who is internationally known for his work in that area. Dr. Hensinger’s career includes many honors; the most recent one is his installation as the first William S. Smith Collegiate Professor.

Seven−year−old Dylan Rutledge and his family know the orthopaedics department well. Turn to page 6 to find out about the important team approach that has helped Dylan and his family through numerous surgeries and hospitalizations.

Another 7−year old has shown us that Mott "helpers" can be any age. This issue profiles a young and caring donor, 7−year−old Rachel Drogs who donated half of her life savings to benefit the future C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and Women's Hospital.

Commitment and caring were the ingredients Kalie (age 12) and Kendra Keyes (age 9) and Nicole DeGrace (age 12), friends and sister to Katie DeGrace respectively, used to respond to Katie’s cancer diagnosis. Their actions and those of other helpers resulted in an amazing bake sale that raised more than $13,000.

We are grateful for all of the helping hands that make Mott’s level of patient care possible and for all of the people who are supporting the new hospital project, which will allow us to offer that care to more children and women. That level of care contributed to our ranking as one of the best pediatric hospitals in the nation and the only children’s hospital in Michigan to make U.S.News & World Report’s first stand-alone "America’s Best Children’s Hospitals" list.
