Friends and family raise more than $33,000 in honor of 10−year−old Katie DeGrace, who had ovarian cancer
In October 2006, 10−year−old Katie DeGrace was diagnosed with ovarian cancer after emergency surgery to remove a tumor. Her friends, family and a whole community of people demonstrated their great love and caring for her with their amazing actions.
The following month, Katie’s older sister Nicole, and Nicole’s best friend, Kalie Keyes, joined forces with friends and businesses to organize an amazing bake sale, "Kookies 4 Katie," which raised more than $13,000 for Child and Family Life and the new C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Women’s Hospital project. Kalie’s younger sister, Kendra, also raised more than $200 by selling "M Go Blue for Mott" bracelets.
The Keyes family was involved in organizing a memorable night known as "Katie’s Ball." More than 250 guests attended the event at Zehnder’s in Frankenmuth. The evening had many highlights—former U−M football player Jamie Morris was the keynote speaker and Katie’s doctor, James Connelly, M.D., also spoke. Nicole and Kallie introduced a special slide show and recalled the highlight of their year—hearing that Katie was cancer free! The generous crowd and donors raised more than $19,000 for Mott. |

On July 27−29, a University of Michigan Health System team biked 300 miles from Traverse City to Chelsea as part of the 20th anniversary of the Make A Wish event—Wish−A−Mile 300 Bicycle Tour. The Mott team, named "Ruby's Red Riders," led by Captain Blair Dudley, R.N, placed 5th in the category of teams with fewer than 20 members, raising $15,410 in pledges for Make A Wish. The team wore their Mott Hospital/U-M Department of Pediatrics jerseys with pride. Congratulations to the team! The event raised more than $1 million!

Congratulations to this group from the Division of General Pediatrics who attended the Tigers’ baseball game on August 8, 2007. A portion of the tickets sold by Mott Hospital benefited the campaign for the new University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Women’s Hospital. The event raised almost $12,000, and the group from pediatrics contributed $594 with their purchase of 66 tickets! |
