At the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, family-centered care is a philosophy that is followed every day. This issue of Michigan Cares highlights some of the extraordinary people and programs that help families as well as patients.

Benjamin Bonsor’s mom was a patient of the Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Center before Benjamin was born. She shares her story and her gratitude to the Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Center team.

Benjamin spent his first five weeks of life in the Holden Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Holden is a 40-bed NICU for newborns who require intensive medical and nursing care. Many infants are referred to Holden from other Level III NICUs throughout the state for the very specialized treatments offered. The story of nurse Julie Sarkesian (page 8) shows the great Holden teamwork.

Dave Brandon has first-hand knowledge of the Holden NICU, because his twin sons were patients at Holden 27 years ago. Dave and his wife Jan have supported Mott in numerous ways—they serve on the Mott Community Board of Advisors; they co-chair the campaign for the new Mott Children’s Hospital and Women’s Hospital; and their gift of $2 million will assist the construction of the neonatal intensive care unit in the new Mott Children’s Hospital and Women’s Hospital, which is scheduled to open in 2011. Families have even been involved in the planning of the new hospital.

Families were also involved in the development of the Family Resource Center. The center opened last fall to meet families’ needs for information, education, recreation and support.

Recently, Child magazine released the rankings of the top children’s hospitals in the country. Mott ranked as the top children’s hospital in the state, and among the best in the nation. For the fourth year in a row, Mott ranked in the top 15 (number 13 overall).

Our commitment to family-centered care is reflected in everything we do. To learn more, visit: http://www.med.umich.edu/mott/touch/who_family.html.
