Dr. Ohye is a Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgeon with research interests in the palliation of single ventricle heart disease and
neuroprotection during cardiac surgery.
James G. Gurney, Ph.D., (Co-Director), Child Health Evaluation and Research Unit
Dr. Gurney is an epidemiologist who conducts clinical research on long-term medical and psychosocial outcomes. His research
interests include the transitioning of patients with congenital heart disease to self-care, minimizing the impact of
congenital cardiac defects on patients and their families to improve their quality of life, and assessing short and
long term outcomes of medical and surgical intervention in patients with congenital heart disease.
John R. Charpie, M.D., Ph.D., Division of Pediatric Cardiology
Dr. Charpie is the Amnon Rosenthal Professor of Pediatric Cardiology and a a Pediatric Cardiac IntensivistMedical Director
of the Pediatric Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit. His with rresearch interests includein vascular endothelial dysfunction
and nitric oxide signaling, myocardial protection during surgery, and in the prevention, detection and treatment of low
cardiac output syndrome in the post-operative patient.
Timothy Cotts, M.D., Division of Pediatric Cardiology
Dr. Cotts is a Pediatric Cardiologist who specializes in the treatment of adults with congenital heart disease.
His research interests include the optimization of long-term outcomes and the transitioning of the patient with
congential heart disease from Pediatric-based to Adult-based care.
Robert J. Gajarski, M.D., Division of Pediatric Cardiology
Dr. Gajarski is a Pediatric Cardiac Transplant Specialist. His research interests include the prevention and treatment of
cardiac transplant rejection and the education of transplant recipient regarding self-care.
Caren S. Goldberg, M.D., M.S., Division of Pediatric Cardiology
Dr. Goldberg has a masters degree in research design and statistical analysis. Her research interests include
analysis of long term outcomes with particular emphasis on neurocognitive development in patients with congential
cardiac defects.
Jennifer C. Hirsch, M.D., Division of Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery
Dr. Hirsch is Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgeon with research training through the prestigous Robert Wood Johnson
fellowship program. Her primary research focus is in the evaluation of surgical outcomes and the optimization of
perioperative care.
Mark W. Russell, M.D., Division of Pediatric Cardiology
Dr. Russell is a Pediatric Cardiologist with training in basic research and molecular genetics. His clinical research
interests include the molecular genetics of congenital heart disease and inherited cardiomyopathies and in the use of
molecular strategies to inform and advance medical and surgical therapies.
Thomas P. Shanley, M.D., Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine
Dr. Shanley is a Pediatric Intensivist whose research interests include the regulation of host innate immune
responses, pathophysiologic mechanisms mediating acute tissue injury, mechanisms of immunoparalysis and regulation of
inflammatory cell signaling.
