Child and Family Life
Program and Services: Medical Play & Procedure Preparation
Our Certified Child Life Specialists supervise therapeutic and diversional play, prepare children for and assist children during medical tests and procedures through education, rehearsal, and coping skill development, and support families during hospitalization or challenging events. Preparation for procedures and surgery will better equip the pediatric patient with an understanding of his/her medical condition. It also provides the opportunity to rehearse for the procedure while learning ways to help themselves cope. Siblings of hospitalized children and parent/caregivers are provided with preparation, coping tools and strategies to help them assist their family member who is hospitalized. These individuals are available to work with patients and families on a one-on-one basis by staff referral or patient/family request.
