Kids Rights and Responsibilities
Mott patients and their families have certain rights and responsibilities that make them an active and influential part of the patient’s health care. We promise to do everything we can to make our patients feel better and, as part of that commitment, have designed the Mott Kids Rights and Responsibilities to outline what patients and their families can expect from us, and what they can do to keep the channels of communication open and clear.
University of Michigan Health System C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital Kids Rights and Responsibilities
While you are here, you will get the best care possible. That means:
- You will be treated fairly.
- No one will smoke around you.
- You will have as much privacy as possible.
- You can speak to your family and friends as long as your doctor says it is okay. If it is not okay, your doctor will tell you why.
- If you are in pain, we will help you.
- We will be friendly and treat you nicely.
While you are here, you and your family can work with the doctor to make treatment choices. That means:
- We will share with you and your family information about why you are here and how we can make you better.
- The doctors, nurses and other helpers will tell you their names and who they are.
- We will teach you everything you need to know about how to take care of yourself and how to take your medicine.
- You and your family can help doctors decide what is best for you while you are at the hospital and when you go home.
- You and your family can talk to your doctor if you do not want treatment.
- You and your family can help make treatment decisions, but you cannot ask for treatment that you do not need.
- We will not do experimental treatments without you and your family saying it is okay.
While you are here, you and your family may ask to see your medical record. That means:
- You and your family may see all your charts, x-rays, test results, and other information in the medical record.
- You and your family may ask for a copy of your medical record.
- You and your family may ask that changes be made to your medical record.
- You and your family may tell us not to share your information.
- If your information is shared with others, you and your family may ask us for a list of people who saw the information.
While you are here, and when you leave, your information will be kept private. That means:
- No one except doctors, nurses and other helpers can see your medical record without you and your family saying it is okay.
- If you are in the hospital, you can ask us to share information with a family member and your regular doctor.
While you are here, you can tell us if you think something is not fair. That means:
- You and your family can ask us to explain what the doctors, nurses and other helpers are doing.
- You and your family can ask us to explain each charge on your bill.
- If you are not happy with us, you and your family should tell us so we can work through the problem together.
- If you told us you are not happy and want to speak to someone else, you and your family can call our Patient Relations Department at 734-936-4330 or 877-285-7788. You can also call the Michigan Department of Consumer & Industry Services at 517-373-9196. Their address is Bureau of Health Services, P.O. Box 30670, Lansing, Michigan 48909-8170.
While you are here, there are a few rules we want you to follow:
- You, your family and your friends should follow the hospital rules at all times.
- You should treat doctors, nurses, and other people in the hospital nicely.
- You and your family should tell us everything you can about your health and any medicine you are taking.
- You and your family should follow directions for taking care of yourself.
- You should tell us if you do not understand what we say or do.
- You should tell us if you have any problems with the medical treatment or how we are treating you.
- You and your family should make appointments and let us know in advance if you need to cancel them.
- If you and your family say you do not want treatment and there is nothing else we can do to make you feel better, we may have to stop taking care of you. We will tell you ahead of time if that happens.
