This issue of Michigan Cares is dedicated to the wonderful nurses at the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Women’s Hospital. Our nurses are committed to excellence in patient care, and this issue honors the men and women who work so hard to help our patients and their families.

If you’ve driven by the hospital recently, you’ve probably noticed the dramatic changes in the construction site for the new University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Women’s Hospital. We are two years into the project and a little over two years away from the opening.

Departments throughout the medical center are joining forces to support the new hospital. Many employees have contributed to the unique Pewabic tiles that will be such a beautiful part of the new hospital. On page 14 you can read about the nurses who have found creative ways to raise money for the tiles and the new hospital.

The first certified nurse midwives started at the University of Michigan long before the current birth center opened. This month the University of Michigan certified nurse midwives celebrate 25 years of providing care and support to women.

Nurses like Loree Collett, Michelle Nemshak and Kay Rademacher apply their expertise from their nursing careers to help make decisions for the new hospital that will benefit patient care. Designing the new hospital has been a very collaborative process. Turn to page 8 to learn about some of the features that will benefit nurses and their patients when the new hospital opens its doors.

We also celebrate the importance of having a highly ranked school of nursing. Nursing students like Hanna Taylor benefit from learning in a world-class medical center and patients benefit from having nurses and nursing students with the compassion and caring that Hanna has shown.

We’re proud of the nurses who have contributed to the past, present and future of C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. Find out more about U-M Nursing.
