Where can I get help connecting my laptop?

See the Family Laptop Guide for full instructions on connecting your laptop. The “Troubleshooting” section provides tips and tricks for your connection. The “Frequently Asked Questions” section addresses a number of common questions. You may also wish to contact your hardware vendor’s support line.

Can I borrow a laptop from Mott?

At this time we do not have laptops available for borrowing.

Where can I connect my laptop to the network?

In the Mott child patient rooms, the wall jack is adjacent to the under-mounted radio. Look for the arrows labeled “Family Laptop Connection”.

The computer in my room doesn’t seem to be working – what should I do?

Please alert your nurse and explain the problem you are having. Your nurse will contact computer support for you.

Why can’t I access any websites?

It is possible that your computer network is not working properly. Please tell your nurse, who will request computer support for you.

I know my network connection is working, but I still can’t access some websites.

Due to security and content, some Internet filtering is done to protect the network. Some websites may be inaccessible.

I understand that some web content is restricted, but why can’t I get to Patient Education and other University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) websites?

We are sorry, but at this time we are unable to permit access to UMHS websites. We are working to correct this. Thank you for your patience.

I am a UMHS staff and I want to access my email – can I do this?

We are sorry, but these computers are intended for patient use only, and are prohibited from accessing any UMHS clinical resources (including Groupwise).

Can I access GroupWise Email on my laptop?

Yes. UMHS GroupWise email (employee email) is accessible if you use a dial-up connection to connect your laptop to the network.

Can I print?

We currently do not support printing in the Patient Activity Rooms. Printing is accessible from the classroom (Mott Room F6555). Printing privileges are restricted. Please contact the Mott teachers and they will assist you.

Can I bring in movies from home?

Yes, any standard DVD movies will work. Also, your unit may have a number of movies available for you to view. Ask your nurse to see a selection.

Can I install more games or other software?

We are sorry, but at this time we do not allow the installation of any additional software, in order to preserve the stability and quality of the computers.

Can I request more games or other software?

Yes. If you have any suggestions, please fill out this suggestion form.

Can guests/visitors get an account for accessing the computers?

We are sorry, but at this time the computers and accounts are intended only for use by patients of C.S. Mott Hospital.

How do I request new locations for patient computers or laptop connections?

I am having trouble with the CD creation software.

Please see this Help document which has additional instructions for using the software.

Can I restrict my child to particular games and/or services on the computers?

We are sorry, but we are unable to facilitate this. We are investigating.

How are kids being protected from inappropriate materials on the internet?

We use a product called Websense (http://www.websense.com). Configuration of this product was determined by a committee of Mott staff and leadership. If you have concerns, please fill out this suggestion form.

My child did something objectionable with the computer – what can I do about this?

If your child was able to access a website that cause you concern, please see the above question and/or fill out this suggestion form. If your child was able to damage the computer and/or its accessories, please inform the nurse who will seek assistance from the support group.

Can I temporarily deny my child access to the computer?

Yes, if you would like to temporarily suspend your child’s computer account, please ask your nurse who will assist you with this. The account can be suspended for a period of time and then reactivated again when you choose.

Is there any charge for this service? Are there any plans to charge in the future?

These services were entirely provided by donations of equipment and labor. The University of Michigan Health System has no intention of ever charging for these services.
