THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN HEALTH SYSTEM
MEDICAID MANAGED CARE GME PROJECT

Project Structure

The Project is organized as a set of educational programs sponsored by four primary care departments - Family Medicine, Internal Medicine (General Medicine and Geriatric divisions), Obstetrics/Gynecology, and Pediatrics. The Project Core is made up of leadership from each department, as well as the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education and a representative from M-Care, the Project's managed care partner. The Core provides direction and coordination for the Project's curriculum development, its implementation, and its evaluation.

Core Activities

In the months of February and March Core members met with the director of the Obstetrics/Gynecology component (2/8) and with Family Medicine leadership (2/9) and traveled to Massachusetts (3/8) to meet with the director and other members of the Harvard Pilgrim Residency Program.

Throughout the month of February Core members made arrangements to hire a medical writer who would assist in preparing the deliverables of the project. After a lengthy search and interview process, an excellent candidate was found and, as of the beginning of April, Kathryn Clark will be working with Core staff in assisting with the preparation of final reports, impact statements, and other deliverables from each of the departments involved with the Project.

Core leadership as a whole met in March to hear a report about that month's quarterly meeting in Lansing and a review of the Harvard Pilgrim site visit and to discuss each department's cost share budgets.

Finally, a completed and signed copy of the amendment to the grant contract for this Project was received back from Lansing on 3/21, extending our completion date for all deliverables to September 30, 2000.

Department Activities

The project-developed rotations for learners in Family Medicine, Geriatrics, and Pediatrics took place as scheduled.

Dr. Hope Haefner of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department met with Core leadership on March 8 to review the activities of the OB/G rotation.

Kent Sheets and Amy Friedman of the Family Medicine Department met with Core leadership on March 9 at The Corner Health Center to discuss how staff changes would impact the Project's rotation at The Corner.

Next Steps

Continue to work with the Family Medicine project coordinator in matters involving new faculty at The Corner Health Center
Introduce the newly hired medical writer to the core faculty leadership from each department and establish mutual working goals and deadlines

Barriers

Delays in obtaining data for the HEDIS-based teaching module have slowed development of that portion of the curriculum.
