MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF
COMMUNITY HEALTH

THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN HEALTH SYSTEM
MEDICAID MANAGED CARE
GME PROJECT
Project Structure
The Project is organized as a set of educational programs sponsored by four primary care departments - Family Medicine, Internal Medicine (General Medicine and Geriatric divisions), Obstetrics/Gynecology, and Pediatrics. The Project Core is made up of leadership from each department, as well as the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education and a representative from M-Care, the Project's managed care partner. The Core provides direction and coordination for the Project's curriculum development, its implementation, and its evaluation.
Core Activities
In the months of December and January Resources Core leadership began to research and interview for a part-time medical writer who would codify and complete descriptions of the academic curricula created by this Project. Members of the Resources Core attended the Quarterly Meeting in Lansing on December 10 to participate with other consortia in demonstrating technological training tools developed for this Project. Core leadership as a whole met on January 19 and presented updates from each department and reviewed progress on deliverables and cost share budgets.
During this period biweekly meetings of the Resources Core began to plan the analysis of the evaluation instruments which have been developed and implemented by the Project and began researching outlets in which to present academic output relating to the activities of the Project.
An amendment to the grant contract for this Project, extending our completion date to September 30, 2000, was received in late November. The months since have been spent in pursuit of signatures required by the amendment. All signatures needed at this end were in place by late January and the amendment was returned to the Department of Community Health for signatures.
Department Activities
The established rotations for learners in Family Medicine, Geriatrics, Obstetrics/Gynecology, and Pediatrics took place as scheduled.
Family Medicine: The long-awaited administrative support needed for this department arrived in the person of Amy Friedman, MPH, who began working as the department's project coordinator in mid-December. In January notice was received that Dr. Randy Ward, a member of the Core leadership from this department, would be leaving the University of Michigan in the Spring.
Next Steps
| Complete and implement the teaching modules on patient satisfaction, resource utilization, and HEDIS measures. | |
| Integrate the Family Medicine project coordinator into the workings of the Project as a whole. | |
| Review progress to date, deliverables, and next steps with Obstetrics/Gynecology Department leadership. |
Barriers
Staff turn over in the Family Medicine department will seriously impact the activities of the Project at The Corner Health Center. Core leadership is working to insure that the transitions are made as smoothly as possible.
