Welcome Alumni and Friends of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. Here we will update you about news of our graduates and friends of the department.
Congratulations to our MacNeal Dissertation Awardees. Alumni John-Demian Sauer from the lab of Michele Swanson and Mike McConnell from the lab of Mike Imperiale were co-awardees of the 2006-2007 MacNeal Dissertation Award. These two outstanding alumni received this award based on their respective dissertations entitled: “Contribution of Pht Transporters to Nutrient Acquisition and Differentiation of Intracellular Legionella pneumophila” and “Recombinant Adenovirus Vaccines against Anthrax.”
To recognize their work, the Department invited JD and Mike to give a joint seminar on October 31, 2008 to tell us about their work conducted since their graduation. JD spoke on “Forward Genetic Screens for Host and Bacterial Genes that Affect Innate Immune Recognition” and Mike delivered a lecture on “Molecular Epidemiology of HIB-1 in Newly Infected Patients in Southern Spain.” They delivered their lectures to a packed house. The lecture was followed by a well attended reception. Congratulations gentlemen!
This Year’s Brockman Lecture will be delivered on December 4, 2008 by Dr. Xiaowei Zhuang in the Departments of Chemistry and Chemical Biology & Physics at Harvard University and will be hosted by Joel Swanson.
