Ariana was born without four ribs on her left side and with several health problems, including severe chest and spinal deformities. Doctors at U-M C.S. Mott Children's Hospital performed a state-of-the-art procedure (VEPTR) using an expandable titanium rib that would help her breathe and grow. She was the first person in the state of Michigan to have this procedure done.
