The “Kickin’ It” Event
Scheduled for Saturday, March 24, 2007
Tobacco kills nearly half a million Americans every year. While maintaining that tobacco should be used solely by adults, tobacco companies look toward youth as “replacement customers”. More than 2,000 youths become addicted to nicotine each day – one in three will die prematurely as a direct result of tobacco use.
“Kick Butts Day” is an annual celebration of youth advocacy, leadership and activism. The purpose of the annual event is to raise awareness in young people about tobacco use and the methods tobacco companies use to generate new tobacco users. “Kickin’ It” is a special event sponsored by the UMHS Tobacco Consultation Service, an affiliate of MFit Health Promotion Division, as part of the national “Kick Butts” program.
This year’s event combines tobacco education and the popularity of soccer to provide a fun-filled educational morning for youngsters in grades K - 8. All Washtenaw County youth in those grades are invited to join local soccer club members in a mini-soccer clinic. This clinic will emphasize such skills as goal-tending, passing, dribbling, and scoring. Youngsters will also participate in several interactive tobacco education activities. Volunteers from local universities, high schools, and the UM Health System will ensure a safe learning environment for all participants.
This year’s event will be held on Saturday,March 24 from 9:30-12:00 at the Huron High School Dome Gymnasium located at 2727 Fuller Rd. Ann Arbor. Pre-registration is required. (Map & Directions to site)
Registration is limited to 300 students. Schools/Organizations are encouraged to register and come as groups. All children must have a completed consent/medical release form before they will be allowed to participate. Each participant will receive a “Kickin’ It” t-shirt. This event is FREE of charge.
