INPATIENT or BEDSIDE PROGRAM
The University of Michigan Health System provides a bedside visit by a Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist (CTTS) to tobacco using patients. The purpose of the bedside program is to:
- To work with the treatment team to prevent or minimize nicotine withdrawal by assessing the need for nicotine pharmacological aids
- Provide an explanation of the UMHS Smoke-free Environment policy/safety issues
- Lastly, to assess the patient’s readiness to quit and then provide an appropriate message to encourage tobacco users movement toward quitting
For those patients who want help, the TTS helps with:
- Developing a quit plan
- Providing self-help materials
- Referral to outpatient cessation program
- Follow-up contact at one, three, and six weeks post discharge
