Inpatient Program

INPATIENT or BEDSIDE PROGRAM

The University of Michigan Health System provides a bedside visit by a Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist (CTTS) to tobacco using patients. The purpose of the bedside program is to:

  1. To work with the treatment team to prevent or minimize nicotine withdrawal by assessing the need for nicotine pharmacological aids
  2. Provide an explanation of the UMHS Smoke-free Environment policy/safety issues
  3. Lastly, to assess the patient’s readiness to quit and then provide an appropriate message to encourage tobacco users movement toward quitting

For those patients who want help, the TTS helps with:

  1. Developing a quit plan
  2. Providing self-help materials
  3. Referral to outpatient cessation program
  4. Follow-up contact at one, three, and six weeks post discharge
