• Spring/Summer registration is now open.
  • Spring/Summer classes begin May 7, 2009 and end August 19.
  • Classes are offered at various locations across the University of Michigan medical complex, the Ann Arbor campus and at the MFit Fitness Center-Ice Cube.
  • MFit classes are open to all UMHS employees, U of M employees and the general public.
  • Don't worry if you miss the first few weeks - latecomers are welcome in most classes. New 15-week sessions begin every January, May & September.
  • All UM employees receive a $10 discount per class/section (Spinning and 15-Visit Punch Cards are not included.)

Make sure you have read the exercise class policies before registering. Registration for any class constitutes acceptance of these policies.

Abs & Back

A mix of stretching and strengthening exercises that target the back, abdominals and buttocks to reduce stress on the spine, improve muscular balance and definition, and increase flexibility.

Belly Dancing

Belly dance is a fun and beautiful low impact exercise. In this class you will build grace, strength and flexibility with an emphasis on working the core muscles. Good posture and basic steps will be covered. All ages & fitness levels welcome. Proper footwear required (dance/ballet shoes etc.)

Body Sculpting / Strength Training

Click to see Body Sculpting class Increase your strength, endurance, and metabolic rate using elastic resistance tubing and small hand weights. Dynaband & Dynaloops provided; bring your own hand weights.

Body Sculpting — Stability Ball

Strengthen, tone, and stretch your entire body with stability balls and free-weights. Exercises will provide core stabilization and improvements in posture, balance and flexibility. Please bring hand weights to class, except for classes held at the Cube. Balls provided.

Boot Camp

Cardio work outs, interval training, and many other exercises using weights and/or body weight to lose body fat, increase cardiovascular efficiency, increase strength, and help people get into a routine of regular exercise. This is a fun, engaging, fast moving, and effective work out You will see marked improvements in strength, endurance and stamina.

Cardio Dance, Core & Flexibility

This well-paced blend of low-impact dance aerobics and Latin-flavored Zumba moves makes for a fun cardio mix. Core conditioning includes standing balance work and basic Pilates mat exercises. The class concludes with a series of stretch and relaxation exercises. Appropriate for all fitness levels. Proper footwear required (sneakers, etc.).

Cardio Interval

This class alternates between easy-to-follow step aerobic patterns and Body Sculpt for continuous calorie-burning.

Cardio Sculpt

A lively, balanced and effective workout that includes 40 minutes of high-energy, low-impact floor or step aerobics, and step pump, followed by Body Sculpt. View a short Cardio Sculpt video.

Chi Kung

Peaceful Dragon SchoolChi Kung (Qigong) is a Chinese style of Yoga that focuses on stretching as well as the use of imagery and movement. In this class, the Wild Goose Chi Kung Form, a series of 56 movements, will be the focal learning tool as students learn to sense their own energy/chi and its intricate connection with nature.

Chi Kung/Hapkido Breathing Class

Breathing, chi kung style, starting from laying down, introducing total breath techniques progressing to standing, adding in martial arts stances, building on this to incorporate hand motions, and then further movement. This system is used in basic hapkido and hankido (Korean martial art) practice. This breathing system enhances abdominal mobility, core muscle coordination, mental focus, and core strength.

Circuit Training

If you are looking for variety, look no further! This class will combine strength conditioning and cardiovascular exercises in a fun circuit format. Equipment will be provided.

Creative Energy Dance

In the first part of this class you will learn some creative movement and dance; in the second part you will move! The dancing is mostly freeform, working to regain a freedom of motion. With this class you can bridge relaxation and fitness!

Fitness Fencing

An introductory course in the sport of fencing. Fencing is a game of chess-like strategy, played at the speed of thought & hand with a lightweight sword. Emphasizing technique and form, Fencing is a highly aerobic activity which will develop posture, balance, movement and increase neurological complexity. Fencing has a number of common side effects including dramatic cardiovascular benefits and weight loss. All equipment provided.

Golf Fitness

Learn how to stretch and strengthen your body to improve your golf game--then meet with two UM golf pros to complete the work! This 6 week course starts with two sessions of whole body, sport-specific work outs, then moves to the golf course the last four weeks to continue the progress!

Karate - Wright’s Isshin-ryu*

Discipline is stressed along with extensive physical conditioning. Gain flexibility and knowledge of self-defense, Kata, and kumite. *For 3 months you can take any 2 classes each week for $150, www.wrightskarate21.com, (No UM discounts)

Kickboxing

Cardio Kickboxing is a fun, fast-paced class that uses kickboxing moves to get a great cardio workout! No actual striking of bags, etc., is included.

Laughter Yoga

Laughter Yoga combines the benefits of laughter and yoga breathing. Laughter is relaxing, reduces stress, great for the lungs and heart, and increases feelings of joy and wellness.

Myofacial Massage - Foam Rolling

Have any tight muscles that need to be worked out? Then this is the class for you! By using the foam roller, you can alleviate your tense areas while giving yourself a massage. The class will work through the legs, hips, glutes, shoulders, back and more. All levels are welcome - feel free to bring you roller or half roller with you.

Nia

Nia addresses the whole person, using a comprehensive, holistic exercise approach designed with a combination of nine classic movement forms. Nia blends Martial Arts, Dance Arts and Healing Arts. Nia is done barefoot to music and delivers cardiovascular and whole-body conditioning

Pilates

Pilates is a mind-body exercise with emphasis on core strength to improve movement quality, posture, and breathing. It’s an effective way to shape up, slim down, and feel great. All participants should bring a towel or yoga mat. View a short Pilates video.

Pilates on the Stability Ball

The strength and flexibility training of basic Pilates movements combined with the balance challenges of the stability ball equals one great workout. This integrative class will improve your abdominal and back strength, your posture, and your overall balance and flexibility. Balls provided.

Power Yoga

A form of yoga with an accelerated succession of yoga postures that incorporates strength, flexibility, balance, and breathing technique. It includes many postures that develop upper body and core strength.

Sculpt, Stretch and Strengthen

The class will include working with free weights, barre and floor exercises, to tone and strengthen muscles, with added emphasis on working core muscles through basic Pilates exercises. Also included will be a longer stretching section to lengthen muscles and for relaxation.

Self Defense for the Real World

Self-Defense techniques based on simple and practical moves that reflect real-world situations — seized from behind, hands grabbed, etc. Emphasis on repetition of select of techniques with broad applicability along with techniques to avoid being hurt when falling and strengthening core body muscles. No previous experience required — individual advancement emphasized.

Spinning

In conjunction with Bodies in Balance at the Bodies in Balance Studio, 211 E. Ann Street and 1 on 1 Athletic Club, 2875 Boardwalk Street. Spinning is a cardio-vascular workout on specially designed stationery bikes. A certified instructor uses music, imagery, and technique to motivate and train students. All levels and abilities train together, using heart rate monitors so that each student is working in the optimum intensity for his/her goals. View a short Spinning video. Stretching and Relaxation

Take a few minutes out of your day and learn some stretches and relaxation techniques you can do every day, to help you feel better and to reduce stress.

Super Circuits

T’ai Chi

Practice this ancient martial art to help manage stress and improve relaxation response. T’ai Chi enhances one’s balance, coordination, physical prowess, and general sense of well-being.

Yoga

Yogilates

Yogilates is a blend of Pilates and Yoga. Core strength is concentrated on through the class. You must have had Yoga and or Pilates within the past two years in order to take this Intermediate class. All participants should bring a towel or yoga mat.

Zumba

Zumba is a dance fitness class based on Latin dance and using international rhythms. It’s a party you won’t want to miss!! So leave your inhibitions at the door and come have some fun with a great work out! Proper footwear required (sneakers, etc.). View a short Zumba video.

Bodies in Balance Spinning Punchcard

MFit, in conjunction with Bodies in Balance, is offering a spinning class punchcard! You get 15 sessions for $100! For more information, call 975-3056. The classes are held at 211 E Ann.

1 on 1 Athletic Club Spinning Punchcard

MFit, in conjunction with 1 on 1, is offering a spinning class punchcard! Purchase a 15 visit punch card for $120 and attend any 15 spinning classes at 1 on 1 (punchcard expires after 6 months). For more information, call 975-3056. The classes are held at 2875 Boardwalk St.

The 15-Visit Punch Card

If your schedule varies, or you want to participate in several different classes, consider purchasing MFit’s 15-Visit Punch Card. The card is good for any 100 level classes, at any MFit location. This $50 punch card cannot be used for Spinning. Present the card to the instructor just before class starts, sign-in, and join the class.

Punch Cards are valid for 6 months from the date of purchase at a cost of $50. Please note that we are unable to offer discounts on this option. You can order your punch card by calling (734) 975-3024 or stopping by the Health and Wellness Resource Center.

Because class sizes are limited, it is not always possible to accommodate Punch Card holders if the class has filled with registered participants. If you have questions about which classes are open to Punch Card holders, please feel free to call us at (734) 975-3024 for more information.

At the MFit Fitness Center — Ice Cube, the punch cards are not available on a same day basis.
