About Alcohol Management

Who is Alcohol Management for?

The Alcohol Management program is for people with mild to moderate alcohol problems who want to eliminate the negative consequences of their drinking. Alcohol Management is not for those who are severely dependent or alcoholic and require treatment approaches rather than educational ones.

You may already be taking steps to improve your health by exercising more, reducing cholesterol levels, quitting smoking, or learning to manage stress more effectively.

Perhaps you are also concerned about your drinking practices and would like to make better decisions about when and how much to drink.

Is Alcohol Management for you?

To answer this, make a list of pros and cons of drinking. If the long-term costs outweigh the short-term benefits, Alcohol Management may be for you.

Pros - usually quick and reliable
Cons - usually delayed and unpredictable
More relaxed Nausea, hangover
More assertive Disrupted sleep
Feeling numb Embarrassing yourself
Enjoying the "high" Spending too much money

Why Select Alcohol Management?

It is effective. Alcohol Management is based on over 20 years of successful clinical research conducted at the Addiction Research Foundation in Toronto, Ontario. It has demonstrated its ability to help people cut down or stop drinking altogether, reducing consumption by approximately 65%.

It is brief. It includes a 1-hour assessment, then: - Four 1-hour private sessions, or - Five 2-hour group sessions, or - Four 40-50 minute telephone sessions, or - Four 1-hour telephone sessions. Each of the formats includes a three- and nine-month follow-up.

It is professional. Each Alcohol Management counselor has a master's degree in social work, nursing or health education and has extensive training and experience in alcohol education. The program is licensed by the State of Michigan Office of Substance Abuse Services.

It is flexible. You choose to cut down or stop drinking altogether. Also, you choose from three counseling formats: in-person, group or telephone. Finally, you select appointment times convenient for you.

It is innovative. Before Alcohol Management, there were few options to meet the concerns of people with mild to moderate alcohol problems who were not severely dependent on alcohol.

Alcohol Management is an inexpensive and confidential option. Consider the cost, disruption, and problems associated with drinking too much, and ask yourself whether Alcohol Management isn't a smart investment for you.
