Behavior Change and Self Awareness

When it comes to how we eat and how much we are physically active most of us know what we’re supposed to do, yet we do not consistently do it. Why not? The answer is that knowledge alone does not necessarily result in behavior change. This is why the behavior change sessions are designed to assist you in understanding why you behave the way you do in spite of what you know. These sessions assist you in increasing self-awareness, help you to develop insight about your unique behavior patterns and teach proven strategies for doing what you want to do rather than what habit has dictated.

What to Expect

Throughout the program and beyond you will have good and bad days. In the Health Behavior sessions, you will develop perspective about the successes and challenges you encounter. We will help you to apply your knowledge of nutrition and physical activity in order to give you the energy you need to feel healthy. We want to support you in continuing your efforts to improve your health.

Group Meetings

Understanding Hunger
Am I truly hungry or am I just bored? Why is it that I always eat too much when I’m in certain moods? Understanding hunger can help you make healthier choices. At this session, you will learn about the various types of hunger – physical, emotional and environmental – how to identify and to respond to them in this world seemingly full of food.

Intuitive Eating
Using your intuition to eat is natural--we just need to re-learn how to listen to our bodies. In this session you will learn what it means to eat by intuition, understand how your intuition can influence your weight loss goals, and learn strategies to help you eat by using your intuition.

Healthy Thinking
The way we think about ourselves and our abilities affects the way we behave. At this session we’ll explore the relationship between thinking, feeling, and the choices we make. Understanding our thought process can actually increase our success. Furthermore, we’ll explain the role of self-talk and the influence it has on our behavior.

Finding Motivation and Building Support
Research has made it clear - we all need support in order to have the motivation to live healthier. The good news is that support comes in many forms and everyone has the ability to cultivate more. At this last session we will explore the framework for understanding why your motivation seems to come and go and learn how to increase your motivation. In addition, you will learn strategies to strengthen your existing supports and develop new supports.
