Mission Statement

The mission of the University of Michigan Medical Degree/Master of Public Policy (MD/MPP) Joint Degree Program is to provide opportunities for students to explore and integrate complementary interests and career goals that combine medicine and public policy and to offer a unique opportunity to understand the intersection of public policy and medicine. Through academic coursework and practical experience, the Gerald Ford School of Public Policy provides students with skills to effectively analyze and manage programs and data. Graduates are prepared to apply these new techniques in the health care arena to improve patient care, to enhance the quality of medical decision making, and to contribute to medical education and training. Medical students will learn to address such policy issues as managing health care costs and access, regulatory requirements, and addressing public health concerns related to topics such as immunizations and disease control.

Program Structure

The University of Michigan MD/MPP Program is a five-year integrated program. Students accepted into the program will spend their first three years in Medical School, completing the M1, M2, and M3 course work. These students will then matriculate to the Ford School of Public Policy to complete the full first year MPP course load as their fourth program year and complete an MPP summer internship between the fourth and fifth program years. In the fifth year, students will spend one semester completing the MD requirements, and the other semester completing the MPP requirements. The MD and MPP degrees will be awarded only after the completion of the requirements of both programs.

Admission Process For Current Medical Students
Current medical students are encouraged to discuss their interest in the MD/MPP Program with the Medical School’s Program Coordinator, the Office of Student Programs Counselors, or the Program’s Medical School and Ford School advisors. Students should formally apply to the MD/MPP Program by submitting the Medical School’s MD/MPP Intent Form at the end of their M2 year or by October 1st of their M3 year. This form may be obtained from the Program Coordinator (atkinsk@umich.edu). At the time the Intent Form is submitted, students will also submit a written personal statement outlining their goals and reasons for pursuing the MD/MPP degree. Admission to the MD/MPP Program is selective and is not automatic. Applicants are expected to have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and professionalism in Medical School. Applicants must receive Medical School endorsement for admission to the MD/MPP Program through the Clinical Academic Review Board. This process includes rigorous review of the applicant’s overall Medical School performance, personal statement, and any other relevant materials. Students must also formally apply to the Ford School (application deadline is January 15) by completing the standard Rackham application and fulfilling all listed requirements, including a statement of purpose, resume, three letters of recommendation, and transcripts. The Ford School will accept MCAT scores in lieu of the GRE.

Students must also formally apply for the School of Information’s deadline (February 1) by completing the standard SI application and fulfilling all listed requirements, including essays, letters of recommendation, and transcripts. Students who apply to both schools at the same time must take the GRE for the School of Information application. Students already admitted to the MD program can submit their MCAT scores in lieu of the GRE for the School of Information application.
