Sequence Description

The purpose of this sequence is to introduce students to clinical psychiatry. The sequence focuses on the clinical diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders, with those elements of neurobiology, behavioral science, and pharmacology that are essential to the understanding of these disorders. The specific goals for students are listed below.

  • To demonstrate the nomenclature and classification system used in the description of psychiatric symptoms and disorders.
  • To identify the symptoms, etiology, epidemiology, neuropathology, and treatments for each of the major psychiatric disorders.
  • To diagnose the major disorders on the basis of clinical presentation.
  • To describe the medications and psychotherapies used to treat psychiatric disorders.
