Groupwise Use at Med School

There are multiple methods to access your Groupwise email.  Listed below are the most common methods.

 

Web

Use any web enabled device.

You can access your email via the web at https://mail.med.umich.edu

 

Groupwise Software

For PCs and Macs only. Currently there is no handheld version of the software.

PLEASE NOTE: MCIT does not support Macs and may not be able to help you if you are having problems connecting the client to your Groupwise account. If you are a medical student, please contact the LRC Help Desk for assistance.

 

Accessing Groupwise From Other Email Software

Email software such as Thunderbird, Outlook, PDA and Smartphone software – not web browsers - can be used.

Groupwise email can be read by other software clients.*  There have been mixed results with accessing email from handheld devices.

Groupwise servers can work with IMAP software that is not Groupwise like Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, and software that is found on handheld devices and Smartphones. Please look at your device manual for detailed instructions on configuration. Email software are different, they do have common requirements:

    Incoming Server
  • Username is your uniqname
  • Password is your Groupwise Password (Level-2)
  • Email address is your uniqname@med.umich.edu
  • Incoming email server: mail.med.umich.edu
  • Email server type is IMAP (POP3 can also be chosen, but will not have access to Cabinet folders)
    Outgoing Server
  • Outgoing email server: smtp.mail.umich.edu
  • Outgoing email password: Level-1 (Kerberos)
  • Use SSL for SMTP: Yes
  • Outgoing server port number: 587

We have found that for unknown reasons, using email software may not work.  Two similar devices (laptops/PDA), configured exactly the same, can have one work and one not. You can come to the LRC Help Desk ( or email lrc_help@umich.edu) for further assistance. We will give it our best effort, but cannot guarantee we can get it to work.

* The Groupwise client is the preferred and secure method of accessing email, calendaring, and other features. Other clients may not meet HIPAA guidelines.  By using another email application to read emails sent through Groupwise you are taking them from a secure, HIPAA-approved environment and using it in a unsecured environment. Under HIPAA regulations you are responsible for email privacy and security.

Groupwise is the email system that has been approved for secure email communication by UMHS.  Groupwise provides email, calendaring, instant messaging, and other features in a secure, HIPAA-compliant, manner.

You will need to change your password once a year. Prior to your password expiring you will receive multiple e-mail notifications to change your password.

From a Med Campus Computer

From Off Campus or by Phone

Call the MCIT Help Desk at (734) 936-8000.



Expired Passwords

If you do not change your password by the expiration date you will need to contact the MCIT Help Desk at (734) 936-8000 and ask them to reset your password. This can no longer be done online.

By default all U of M students are given the Basic Computing Package. This includes an email account that looks like: "uniqname@mail.umich.edu."

As a medical student you also receive an email account from the Hospital referred to as Groupwise. This email address looks like: "uniqname@med.umich.edu." You are required to use Groupwise. You may also use the University's email account, but many find it confusing to use two accounts.

The final component of email use at the Medical School is the University's Online Directory (UMOD). The UMOD receives emails at "uniqname@umich.edu" and then forwards, or redirects, your mail on to the e-mail forwarding address(es) you specify. Use of the directory for e-mail forwarding means you can keep your "uniqname@umich.edu" address no matter where your e-mail mailbox resides. Systems such as CTools, email groups, etc, often send their email to your "uniqname@umich.edu" address, which then gets forwarded on to your designated account.
