Research

Sports Medicine Research at MedSport has both clinical and basic science components. Under the auspices of the Sport Injury Prevention Center, directed by Ronald Zernicke, Ph.D., projects covering the knee, shoulder and hip joints are underway. Registries for ACL injuries, rotator cuff tears and meniscal tears are under development. Clinical studies on the early development of Osteoarthritis after ACL injury are progressing with funding from the NFL. Laboratory studies on the mechanism of ACL injury, funded by NIH, will hopefully lead to well designed risk factor surveillance and improved injury prevention programs. Students from all levels participate in these programs alongside research scientists from Kinesiology, Engineering and Public Health along with clinicians from Orthopaedic Surgery and Primary Care.
