Sports Medicine Fellowship

Creating leaders in the field

The Section of Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at the University of Michigan offers a one-year fellowship opportunity for post-residency training in the subspecialty of orthopaedic sports medicine and shoulder surgery.

The goal of this program is to provide fellows with the knowledge, skills and tools to become leaders in the sports medicine and shoulder surgery field.

Clinical instruction

During the year, the fellow rotates with each of the orthopaedic surgery sports medicine faculty members at the MedSport Clinic.

The MedSport Clinic:

In addition, the fellow will operate in U-M hospitals' operating rooms using state-of-the-art arthroscopic equipment and technology.

Research

Each fellow will have two months of dedicated research time. The fellow will work closely with one or more faculty members to develop a research plan. Research could be clinical in nature, or could be performed at the Orthopaedic Research Laboratory.Develop team physician skillsFellows will develop their skills as a team physician by providing medical care for teams with the U-M, Eastern Michigan University and USA Hockey National Team Development Program.

Didactic instruction

The Teaching Program includes weekly conferences in sports medicine and shoulder surgery, and a monthly Sports Medicine Journal Club. Anatomic specimens are readily available on which to study and practice surgical approaches and arthroscopic technique in the U-M Orthopaedic Research Laboratory's wet lab.Program application requirements:

Completed an accredited residency in orthopaedic surgery, and must be Board-eligible or Board-certified.

Submit at least three letters of recommendation, one of which must be from the chief of the sports medicine program, and current curriculum vitae, with the standard sports medicine application form.

Applicants with an interest in an academic career will be considered strongly.
