The University of Michigan Medical School will be one of 10 host
schools using VSAS, the new Visiting Student Application Service, to
receive visiting student applications starting in April 2008. To
apply to our school, please complete and submit an electronic VSAS

VSAS opens for student use on Tuesday, April 15, 2008.
We will begin to process visiting student applications on Thursday,
May 1, 2008. The last date to apply for a visiting student
elective periods 10-12 is December 15, 2008.
The University of Michigan Medical School (UMMS) offers a limited
number of clinical electives to students who are in their final year
of medical school at an LCME or AOA accredited school in the U.S. or
Canada.
Students attending foreign medical schools are generally not accepted. For
a determination of eligibility, international students should contact
Kate Durand (kdurand@umich.edu)
at the Global
Reach Office. International students whose credentials have
not been screened for eligibility by the Global Reach Office will NOT
be accepted.
Students may complete a maximum of 2 months of clerkships. Electives
are not available to visiting students during May and June.
Only
the electives listed on this web site are available to visiting
students. Research
electives are not allowed.
Under no circumstances shall a potential visiting student
make independent arrangements with a faculty member for an elective
prior to submitting an application to the Office of Student Programs.
To be considered for a clinical elective:
- Students must be in their final year and in good academic
standing at their home school
- Students must have taken & passed the USMLE Step 1 exam
- Students must have taken and passed required 3rd year clerkships
in Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics
and Surgery
- Students must have completed 48 weeks of required clerkships
in the same medical school at which they completed their basic
science training
In assigning students to available clerkships, the following priority
is followed:
1. University of Michigan students
2. In-state students from Michigan State
University &
Wayne State
University students
3. Out-of-state students
4. International students screened and
determined to be
eligible by
the Global Reach Office.
