The UMMS is one of 63 host schools using VSAS, the AAMC's Visiting Student Application Service, to receive and process visiting student applications. The UMMS offers a limited number of clinical electives to students who are in their final year of medical school at an accredited school in the U.S. or Canada . Students may complete a maximum of 2 clerkships (2 months). Electives are not available to visiting students during the months of May and June. Only electives listed on this web site and on the VSAS web site (they are identical listings) are available to visiting students. Research electives are not allowed.
We will begin to accept visiting student applications on April 6, 2009 and will begin to notify students on May 1, 2009. The last date to apply for a visiting student elective is December 14, 2009.
Students attending foreign medical schools are generally not accepted. For a determination of eligibility, international students should contact Kate Durand at kdurand@umich.edu at the UMMS's Global Reach Office. International students whose credentials have not been screened for eligibility by the Global Reach Office will NOT be accepted.
Under no circumstances shall an interested visiting student make independent arrangements with a faculty member for an elective prior to submitting an application to the Office of Student Programs for processing.
To be considered for a clinical elective:
1. Students must be in their final year and in good academic standing at their home school
2. Students must have taken and passed the USMLE Step 1 exam
3. Students must have taken and passed required 3rd year clerkships in Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics and Surgery
4. Students must have completed 48 weeks of required clerkships in the same medical school at which they completed their basic science training
5. Student must meet requirements of requested elective(s)
In assigning students to available clerkships, the following priority is followed:
1. University of Michigan medical students
2. Students from Wayne State University and Michigan State University
3. Students from LCME-accredited medical schools (U.S. or Canadian)
4. Osteopathic* and students from foreign medical schools (screened and determined to be eligible by the Global Reach Office)
* We accept osteopathic students from Michigan State University , Kirksville , Chicago-Midwestern, Philadelphia , and KC who are in the top third of their class and have passed USMLE Step 1. At the request of a UM Residency Program Director, we will consider osteopathic students who are not in the top third of their class and will waive the USMLE Step 1 requirement if they have passed COMLEX Level 1.
